Rockhampton Skin Check
Skin checks are an important way to help detect changes in your skin that could indicate a health concern. At Mount Archer Medical Centre, we offer skin check medical services to assess moles, lesions and other changes. Our doctors provide thorough examinations in a confidential setting, helping identify any areas that may need further monitoring or treatment.
Located in Rockhampton, we provide skin check appointments for patients of all ages. During your consultation, our doctors will assess your skin and discuss whether any follow-up steps, such as monitoring or removal of lesions, may be appropriate. Minor skin procedures are available where needed, and referrals can be arranged if further assessment is required.

Monitoring Changes Early
Regular skin assessments help monitor your skin health and detect changes early. Our doctors provide skin checks and minor skin procedures as part of your health management. During your appointment, your doctor will assess your skin and provide guidance based on your individual risk factors.
- Full Skin Examinations: Your doctor will assess your skin, looking for changes in moles, freckles and other lesions.
- Minor Procedures: Lesions that appear suspicious or bothersome may be removed for further assessment or patient comfort.
- Individual Risk Factors: Skin cancer risk increases with sun exposure, skin type, family history and personal health history. Your doctor will discuss your circumstances.
- Follow-Up Care: Regular skin checks may be recommended, especially if you have a history of skin changes or previous skin cancer.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens during a skin check?
During a skin check, your doctor will visually assess your skin for changes such as unusual moles, lesions or new spots. They may use a dermatoscope, a magnifying tool with light, to get a clearer view of your skin. The doctor will check areas that are commonly exposed to the sun, such as your face, arms, back and legs, but may also assess less visible areas. If anything unusual is found, they will discuss possible next steps, which may include monitoring or removal.
How often should I have a skin check?
The recommended frequency of skin checks depends on your personal risk factors. People with a history of skin cancer, significant sun exposure or a family history of melanoma may be advised to have yearly checks. Others may be recommended to book every two to three years. If you notice any changes to your skin, such as new spots, changing moles or lesions that bleed, it is important to book an appointment sooner.
What signs should I look for between skin checks?
Common signs to watch for include new moles or spots, changes in the size, shape or colour of existing moles, lesions that bleed without healing, or spots that are painful or itchy. The ABCDE rule is often used to help monitor moles: Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Colour changes, Diameter larger than 6mm, and Evolving shape or size. If you notice any of these changes, it is important to book a skin check as soon as possible.
Are skin checks painful?
A skin check itself is not painful. The examination involves visually assessing your skin and may include the use of a dermatoscope. If a minor procedure is required to remove a lesion, local anaesthetic is used to minimise discomfort. Most patients experience little to no discomfort during these procedures. Your doctor will explain each step of the process and answer any questions you may have to help you feel comfortable during your appointment.
